ANALYSIS OF THE COMMANDMENTS

The Mosaic Law, or Ten Commandments, i.e., the laws of sin and death were given to the Jews. They can save no one. Christians are given the command to love one another. Comparing the two is like the classic case of condemnation vs. justification; ritual vs. celebration; imprisonment vs. BEING SET FREE!

Christians who are still trying to fulfill the Commandments and use them to judge others are not fully mature. The Commandments condemn us, they never saved anyone. Jesus came to fulfill the Law. He died a sinner’s death in our place.

By continuing to live under the Law we become slaves to it, and have not yet matured our relationship with God.

By using the Law as a way to measure spiritual maturity we reject what Christ did for us. It’s like hanging Jesus back up on the cross and crucifying Him all over again, saying,”OK, Jesus, what you did wasn’t good enough; we still have to work our way in.”

No one should be under the bondage of failure and separation by the demands of the letter of the Law, fleeing from God caused by fear of retribution. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. No amount of works can earn our salvation, what amount of works can destroy it?

Christians who are mature have accepted Christ’s gift in faith. We stop trying to prove our salvation by performing works.

With thanksgiving we marvel at the priceless gift He paid for us. We accept that what Christ accomplished in our lives by His death could never be accomplished by the Law. In so accepting this, our faith becomes demonstrated through our works, which become perfected in Christ.

The Law does not rule over mature Christians. As we love everyone, fulfilling the law is a natural result of that love. The Law becomes as unnecessary as a law against picking a green elephant’s nose with a spatula, at sunrise, naked, on the third Monday of the month.

Christ fulfilled the Law. So, the Law is for those of little faith who have not accepted that salvation comes from what Jesus did on the cross. The death and resurrection of Christ heralded in a new commandment, Love One Another.

In fulfilling this Law, we fulfill all other laws.
