Real Love
February often brings to mind romantic thoughts of love. Commercials, red and white littered store shelves, and heart-shaped helium balloons all signal love's value in the world, but recent images and messaging in the mainstream seem to reinforce a love based on material gain and conditions–a selfish, "what have you done for me lately" type of love. What if God loved us, but waited for us to prove how much we loved Him before He demonstrated His love toward us? We'd be left hanging and left without a savior because we'd never be able to demonstrate a selfless love without His example. God sent His only begotten Son, whom He loved (John 3:16), not because we met some criteria and proved ourselves worthy, but simply because He loved us. I'm glad He didn't wait to express it. As Christians we are called to express the same unconditional, agape love–spiritual and selfless love–demonstrated by God and embodied in Christ. Meaning, we should be willing to understand, willing to forgive, and willing to get involved in each other's lives regardless of the return. Let the love of God inside of you be your motivation and express it freely and often. Think of how different the world would be if more people put that type of love into practice. "For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing out of the ordinary?… Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." Matthew 5:46- 48 Topic(s): Christianity |
