I have NOTHING against veterans. when I was a there were still people around that fought in WW1 and 2, and while they really didn't protect this country, they at least went to war for worthy causes.

what in god's name are we STILL doing in afganistan? we went into afganastan supposedly because they were hiding osamma. but ossama was in Pakistan. why we didn't we invade Pakistan? because we liked Pakistan and they are pretty tough. afganistan was much easier.

what in Christ's name are we STILL doing in Iraq? we supposedly invaded Iraq because they had WMDs. surprise, no WMDs. why are we still there? why are American troops STILL dying in Iraq?

neither of these imperial actions are just wars, nor do they have ANYTHING to do with American freedoms. American freedoms have taken a bigger hit from homeland security and the like than anything going on in the middle east.

I don't have anything against veterans...but do NOT automatically think they deserve my undying respect. I think what we are doing in afganistan and Iraq is WAY wrong and that the people doing it don't deserve respect at all. they are government mules doing what they are told to do, even if it is WAY wrong.

sorry. but I am NOT gonna honor that.

ok ok ok. I am getting sick of these posts too. but I am really happy to be taking any of MY money that I can out of the pockets of my local natural gas provider. i think if i show people it can be done inexpensively (or free), maybe more people will take their money away from local utilities too.

i took some of the Styrofoam solar heaters i had made for the church last year (i think they are posted about somewhere in this blog) and brought them into my apartment. they had worked in the church windows to some degree, but they only warmed it up during the day and i only do church at night. additionally, i am trying the heat sink thing in the church windows this winter.

none of the windows in the apartment have a southern exposure. they really don't have much exposure at all, they face east and west and are very close to buildings next door. but they do get a lot of sun in the mornings, at least until after lunch. as in the church, the foam itself is blocking out drafts really well too. i haven't gotten any thermometer readings yet. i just did this this morning, but it feels warmer in here, and i haven't lit up any tealight candle heaters yet. i have the thermostat set to 67.

UPDATE: it is Friday morning, and the first really sunny day we've had this week here. the thermostat was set for 66, and yet it says it is 68. 68 is usually still kind of chilly, but it is really warm and comftortable in here. especially near the windows with the solar heaters. they radiate warmth all around them. the thermometer I have in one of those windows says 74. it is warmer in the windows than the rest of the house. it is usually the coldest around the windows.

bluest one:

I do not EVER visit your blog. when your arrognert (arrogant + ignorant) response to my horrific experience this summer was to make it all about you, I wrote you off forever. you didn't even give me a chance to try to get up off the ground again, you just knocked me down lower; only caring about yourself.

you called me names and tried to make me feel worse. you demanded that I take you off my blog immediately when I didn't even have internet anymore. I went to the library and deleted your blog off my site promptly. you scare the crap out of me. If that is how you treat someone who you count as a friend, I didn't want to be your enemy.

moving forward, I forgive you as Christ commands. but you still scare the crap outta me and I want NOTHING to do with you. please do not talk about me on your blog. you are not allowed here on my blog and I really would appreciate it a lot if you just stayed the fork far away from me.

thank you

I am back in the information super highway saddle again. I got this thing called a photon from freedompop, this is the company that gives me the 250 free minutes a month on my smart phone. I also get 500 free internet minutes on the phone, so I have been able to keep up with my email and other necessities with it. I can get to big church on the smart phone, but not the blogs or chat. as if anybody goes to chat anymore except don and Spanish speakers.

so far, this freedompop seems like a good deal. I will report back if and when it stops being so. this photon thing fits in the palm of a hand and is a wireless hotspot. it actually works. I didn't even have to pay anything to have it shipped to me. installation was simple and quick. I wish all internet provider equipment was this intelligent and easy to use.

in other news, I finished my pop can solar furnace and its ready for installation. it turns out that I couldn't put it on my roof where I wanted to, the roof from the building next door blocks the sun in the afternoon. I was planning on having it push heat into my living room, but I can't put it close enough to make that happen.

I decided to use it for the greenhouse instead. that was my original plan, and there is plenty of sun there. it will be easier to pipe into the greenhouse too, I will likely finish doing that tomorrow. I was considering using the furnace for the church, but I only do church at night and heating it during the day wouldn't help much. the heat sink in the church, and the tea light candle space heaters seem to be working really well, I think they will be enough this winter.

I go to court again this Wednesday. my lawyer keeps assuring me that I won't go to jail. I have been praying on it all a lot and am secure that god will see me through whatever might happen. I have a friend that could look after the building if worse comes to worse, but I want to have all my ducks in a row just in case. I also recoated the roof with silver dollar roof sealer, making it a little tougher for the winter.

my internet is down again.

Comcast tried to charge me $100 to fix it last month when the problem was on their fault. I have talked to supervisors who agreed, but one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, and they shut me off on Wednesday.

I called them TWENTY times without getting anywhere.

time for a new provider.

I just got this free phone from freedompop and it lets me on the internet, but not to the blogs here. I ordered my own FREE hotspot from them now, I think it just showed up in the mail. Freedompop says the internet is a right, not a privelidge. I like these guys.

the phone is not the best connection, I am hoping this hot spot thing is a little faster...but I like the price. I am at the library now.

kiss my doopa Comcast. and you too att.

I made a heat sink in the green house using two 55 gallon drums. I was using the 2 liters up there, but they were too unstable. I was always knocking them over and sometimes they would fall into the plants.

it is not that critical that I keep the greenhouse warm this year. I only have Norway spruce seedlings in it, and they prefer the cold. too warm is not good for them. I have decided to move all the 2 liters into the windows of the church and see if that makes any difference. I have also decided to do another lower-height pop can furnace that will blow solar warmed air into the garage attic, which will ultimately rise into the greenhouse.

I am using plastic milk crates to contain the bottles and it works pretty well. there are 40 bottles in the bottom row pictured. I figure I can get 3 rows high, and I can get another set of 3 rows of 40 on the left of the window. that is 240 2 liter bottles of water. 2 liters is .528344 gallons. that means I can get 126 gallons of water in black bottles up in the window.

I have been tracking the temperatures of the bottles and of the church and I am not really seeing anything going on yet. it is all mid 60s. I am hoping that as it gets colder out, the difference will be more noticeable. the principal is that water retains heat better than almost anything else. I am hoping the water will get heated up by the sun and stay warmer than it is outside into the evening. the windows are double pane and facing south.

I am also putting Fresnel lens sheets between the bottles and the windows. a Fresnel lens is a high power magnifying glass. Fresnel lenses are used in the old projection TVs that nobody wants anymore since flat screens got so cheap. I have been collecting them when I see them thrown away. I have a dozen or so 3 x 5 (?) sheets of the stuff. I save the plexi-glass too.

my problem is that I don't know how Fresnel lenses work? which way should they face? one side looks like the other? is it really making any difference at all? or worse, it is making TOO much difference? there is a way to use these lenses to make a high power destructive beam from the sun. I keep checking on it when the sun is strong.

it was nice out today and I finished the popcan part. now I just have to build the back, and exhaust it to my window. I have been researching fans, and they make them right inside a piece of exhaust pipe. I am going to try one of those, they are kind of pricey though.

the fan will need to suck air out of the bottom of this thing (up on the roof) into the house maybe 3 feet beneath it. according to everything I am reading, it is important to keep the air moving through the furnace at a brisk rate. there is much less heat loss when the air keeps moving quickly. I am using double pane glass, and a manufactured vinyl frame that is made to keep the weather out. it should be fairly efficient.

I am going to make a 2nd one for the greenhouse that will be horizontal rather than vertical. I also still have all the Styrofoam ones I made last year. I am trying something different in the church this year, so I won't put all of them back up there. I will use some of them in the greenhouse.

ok ok ok. I have been experimenting. the terracotta pots, and the steel electrical boxes take a coat of spray paint well. the heat doesn't seem to mess with it. I am going to spray the outside pot green, the inside pot red and use a red painted octagon box for the base. ta da a Christmas tree that will keep you warm.

this is my gift for this Christmas. I am going to make 24 of them. I am going to include a little digital thermometer embedded in a wooden base the electric box will be mounted to. I found these cool little digital things from china for 99 cents each.

I just need a name for it. it should both say Christmas tree and heat. I have been really brainstorming. I like Mexican Christmas tree, because it is ethnic feeling and it does look Mexican. I can make them look more Mexican too on purpose. but that doesn't say anything about the heat. a Mexican pepper tree?

burning bush Christmas tree?

mayan candle tree?

jew tree (because it saves on heating money) ?

a wishmas tree?

tealight chrismas tree

can anybody think of something less dumb? I am thinking I might be able to sell these around Christmas.
