The Journey is What is On the Agenda Today

The summer I turned 50 I took up long distance hiking (backpacking). I had fallen in love with the idea of hiking the 2,000+ mile Appalachian Train from reading an article about it in the late sixties. But I had never learned to backpack, and had experienced all kinds of things that distracted me - like major health challenges.

Finally, I was healed from or mastered control of them all and jumped right into learning to backpack and planning an AT hike to celebrate.

It was only 3 months later, after a lot of research, planning, work and a few practice hikes that I made a 3-day hike on the AT by myself. I was so thrilled! And I still love to hike today.

This weekend I've been in a bit of a slump. The Lord has been ministering to me and finally, today, I realized that today I'm not expected to reach the finish line, today may not even be a day with great accomplishments or startling vistas.

Today, however, my assignment is the journey, and to the degree that I put myself into that (with the measure that I sow) I will reap on the day when I do reach the end of my trail. And, I will reap today, too, as trying with a will to do well always makes a better day than dragging my feet and complaining while feeling sorry for myself.

People who turn out with great accomplishments usually are the ones who steadfastly chipped away at their dream for a seemingly endless time, content in the accomplishment of "working on it."

Now I stand corrected. I am off to spend a little time in the Word and getting on with my journey, er... day.

Grace and peace to all of you!
