How Do We Know the Bible is the Word of God?

Can anyone tell me where I can find Scriptural verses that say the Bible is the word of God?

Thank you,

Gavin

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
2Ti 3:17 that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work.

2Pe 1:21 For these words did not ever come through the impulse of men: but the prophets had them from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

2Ti 3:16 Every holy Writing which comes from God is of profit for teaching, for training, for guiding, for education in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 So that the man of God may be complete, trained and made ready for every good work.

Thank you all for responding! I guess it only fair to admit that I posed a rhetorical question. Altho many ppl will disagree with me, (and I respect their views) I'm not entirely convinced that the Bible actually makes any such claims about itself. But again, my view is just as subjective as any I might disagree with, and I can't claim to be a prophet. I hope folks will hear me out and then feel free to accept or reject my opinion as the Spirit leads them.

I'll deal with each verse that has been suggested to date:

One friend in the chatrooms suggested John 17:15 (KJV)

Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

This is a nice verse but it presupposes what my dear friend hoped to establish. Of course God's word is "truth" but that doesn't prove that the Bible is God's word.

2 Tim 3:16

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. (KJV)

(In fairness to Crucified for his kind suggestion, I'll also include Young's Literal Translation: every Writing [is] God-breathed, and profitable for teaching, for conviction, for setting aright, for instruction that [is] in righteousness.)

Most versions use the term "inspiration" in the first line of this verse. But to inspire, is not the same thing as to dictate verbatim.

Still, the original Greek used the term "God-breathed" which most would agree seems to imply an actual verbal discourse from God, yet can we take this verse literally, especially in light of my next point? To wit:

ALL SCRIPTURE (emphasis added) is inspired by God,,,,,,,

The word "All" calls for some thought. Was Paul refering to every writing that was ever written? Or just potential holy writings? And since at the time he wrote his letter to Timothy, the Bible did not yet exist in any form recognizable today. "All" opens up a whole new can of worms for us. Should this include books that later became the New Testament? Perhaps. But by that same token, since "Scripture" is in most versions a particular noun, perhaps we would have to include the books which were popular at that time which later were rejected from the Bible?

2 Peter 1:21 for (BD)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (BE)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God (NAS

(Or in the KJV, "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost")

Few versions say "these words" but it really wouldn't matter because either translation is talking about prophecy, which we already know was recorded in the Bible. To me, this just reaffirms that the Bible was Inspired by the Holy Spirit, rather than saying anything about the entire Bible being God's verbatim usage.

John 1:1 "In the begining was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" -From my memory.

One of my favorite verses, but it's not talking about the Bible, it's talking about the Savior. The Bible never hung on a cross for us. Jesus is the one who did that. (On this verse, I have to point out that the original Greek used the term "Logos" instead of "Word". I believe early translators did a grave injustice by not introducing the Greek usage into the English vernacular here, because it has lead to much confusion over the centuries. "Logos" is a MUCH broader concept than a mere "word".)

Ephesians 3:1-5 (1 thru 4 included here to show context)

1For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

2If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:

3How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,

4Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)

5Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

Here, Paul is talking about a letter that he wrote. He is speaking in the first person. Tho he speaks ABOUT the message, these verses are not that message. At any rate, it is not God speaking directly. It's Paul.

2 Chron 34:31

And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

As to this verse, I have to admit that at least SOME parts of the Bible are at least probably the dictated words of God. But this verse doesn't deal with the entire Bible. (The same holds for verse 33:1

Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. (KJV)

This verse from the Olivet Discourse is a very good argument in favor of Christ's words being "God's Word". So again, I have to admit that here (as anyplace the Savior is quoted) at least SOME parts of the Bible are God's quoted words.

Still, is a quote the same thing as God speaking? I suppose so if one is a prophet but I don't know that Mark ever made such a claim.

So here I rest my case. I want to thank everyone who was kind enough to reply to my initial post! And if you disagree with me I can only think that it's because you sincerely feel lead by the Holy Spirit to do so. Nothing I've said here carries any more weight than the opinions any of you may have. This is all just IMHO.

I love and revere the Bible. (I believe it to be the best resource we have) But I believe it to be a book ABOUT God's Word, rather than God's actual words (for the most part). I believe that God's Word is written on our hearts.

God Bless You All and thanks again,

Gavin

QUESTION: "How Do We Know the Bible is the Word of God?"

RESPONSE: OK, Ok...Because Jesus said so (referring to the Old Testament):

Luke 24: 44-45..."And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures..."

The Law of Moses

The Prophets

The Psalms...

The totality of the Old Testament.

The New Testament writings were compiled by the Church and four "things" were established in judging (oops! there's that word again - judging! ), to establish their authenticity of authorship as from God.

Notice they could not understand the words He spoke to them of this Gospel of God which are spirit and life UNTIL He opened their understanding.

you can hear God words in your heart not in the Bible. if your heart say "yes" you will hear the words. The Bible was the book that told the existence of the Lord.
If you believed bible did not believe in God. hhhhmmm you can answer that...
