Suck It Up Buttercup!

So you are alone for Valentines Day?! Well suck it up buttercup because there are a lot worse things. Do you really need a box of stale chocolates that have been on the shelf since January 2 to know that you are loved? Is His grace not sufficient in the big scheme of things? (Perhaps scheme may not be the word but surely you know what I mean!)

Today is the 22nd anniversary of my divorce. Kinda strange huh? Yep, my divorce was finalized on this day 22 years ago. It's not a big deal. However, I am entirely grateful to be divorced. (And, alive!)

Besides Valentines Day has gotten to be such a commercial rip off. Flowers, candy, dinner at a restaurant will all cost you more on Valentine's Day. Its basically legalized price gouging. The National Retail Association says 59% of Americans will spend about $126 on Valentine's Day this year. SUCKERS!!!!!!

You know what? You can get all that stuff leftover tomorrow at a fraction of the price!! Retailers will be ready to bring on the Easter propaganda! Besides if you are doing the cheesy whatever is under that tent at the supermarket or drug store, will I pity your relationship!!

Side Note: I saw a pic of One Direction on a candy heart box the other day at Walgreens. What's next Taylor Swift in bunny ears on a plastic egg? But I digress...

I think there are certain advantages to being single. Obviously Valentines Day purchases are one of those items.

Another Side Note: Here in the Houston area, a local radio station promotes a "holiday" on March 14 to "pay back" the men so to speak for their attentiveness during Valentines' Day. Let's just say it includes steak. I guess if my husband spent over $120 on me, I'd be willing to oblige. But truly it's a moot point at this stage.

I have now been divorced much much longer than I ever was married (9 years) & divorced longer than I was single to start with. I think by now I am successfully & happily divorced! You've heard what a successful marriage this couples has & how they must be so happy. Ta Da! They have succeeded! I think I have succeeded at being divorced! This is life for me & days like today are just another day that the Lord has made. Each one a day to get closer to Him, to be more like Jesus, to set new goals & work to achievements, to take risks & sometimes fail, face new trials & tribulations. Maybe learn a thing or two along the way. And sometimes I even sleep in & bask in the day! Its another day in a string of days.

Being a Christian in the world today isn't necessarily easy. Rarely is life anything like those diamond commercials. Every gift doesn't begin at Kay's, no matter what they say on tv. Besides God gives us much better gifts! And sometimes that includes His refining fire that removes the dross within us. If being a single or divorced Christian was easy, everyone would do it!

Besides in the Bible, didn't Paul say it was better to be single?

Side Note: He didn't say "easy" but better.

I know that after all this time, I like taking my half out of the middle of the bed. I like being able to set my thermostat wherever I want it... especially on those hot humid Texas nights when I am doing my personal power surge thing that happens to ladies of a certain age & I WANT it cold enough to hang meat in my bedroom.

And if I want to buy a cheap chocolate cake tomorrow for a fraction of the price and then pig out on it for dinner, I can!

So if you are all booo hooo hoooing because you are alone on Valentines Day, call the wahmbulance on whine-1-1 because I can tell you there are a lot of worse things that can happen.

Did you know that 89% of the worlds population does not have access to clean, safe drinking water!?! About 2.5 billion do not have access to proper sanitation! There are places in the world that make that nasty corner gas station bathroom (on the side of the building) look like a luxury palace.

It is estimated that 925 million people in the world are, as the UN calls it, undernourished. I think you & I would agree that many million of those people aren't just undernourished but literally starving.

Did you know that more than five die every day due to abuse? Or that everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends?

Did you know that 740 WWII veterans will die every day in the US? Or that over 2,000 American soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan?

So suck it up Buttercup. Being alone on Valentine's Day isn't a biggie in any way, shape or means. God loves you. Chances are you have family, friends & even pets that loves you. Heck, Telly Savales may even love you. Put away the Al Green records & get over yourself. God has your back & it's all good!
