The Professor did it in the shop with a Tesla Coil

I recently acquired Netflix service as a way to supplement our no-frills satellite tv subscription. Because of this, I have been able to see some tv programming that I didn't catch when it first aired. One of these programs has been The Colony which has aired on the Discovery Channel. I am watching the first season right now and it's been extremely interesting.

The premise is take six people from all walks of life, have them go without food or sleep for 24 hours and then tell them that the world has suffered some sort of catastrophic disaster before letting them go out into a corded off section of Los Angeles to see if they can survive. The six are sent walking with a few canned goods and other items to an abandoned 80,000 square foot warehouse about 10 miles which will be their sanctuary during this social experiment.

Two days later, four more sleep deprived hungry people join the mix. The group must work together to gather water from the very dirty Los Angeles river, forage for food, provide electricity, sanitation and come up with some semblance of life as they know it.

This group is extremely blessed because they have a rocket scientist, a professor of computer & electrical engineering, a doctor, nurse, contractor and handyman as part of their "colony." The handyman is a bitter angry man, frequent to loud outbursts but, boy, is he handy.

The professor is a genius! This guy makes the professor on Gilligan's Island look like amateur. He comes up with ways to get electricity with stolen solar panels, water filtration and sterilization and radio communication while the handyman and contractor are able to piece meal together spare and broken items to make it work.

When the supply of proteins runs out and the malnutrition starts to take it's toll mentally, emotionally and physically, even the vegetarian professor takes to eating his first red meat in over 30 years...rats!

Nomads of all kinds are sent their way... some friendly, some violent. Some steal food and destroy items at the colony while others beg for a hand out from the colony's continually dwindling resources.

It was easy to turn away the vicious biker thugs and such but when women, and the disabled bang at the colony's door, the decision to give or not to give really shakes many to their core. The colonists faith and moral standards are questioned daily. For instance, what exactly is the definition of stealing in this new world when you don't know if something has been abandoned or if the owner is dead or perhaps the owners are merely away trying to forage for more items themselves?

I can't help but to think that if a group of BC'ers were thrown into a similar situation, some may even kill their fellow man and eat them for lunch!

Personally, I would hope that some of my loved ones would survive to be with me but then again, perhaps they would be in heaven which is a far better place. But I would definitely want the professor to be in my colony, that's for sure! And I think I could even bear the obnoxious brash handyman long enough to find a softer side of the guy.

I look forward to seeing the last 2 episodes and then Season 2 to see how a new group of colonists fare. So far, this show has really got me thinking! I do know this that without God, there is no way I would survive at all.

Nope, I am totally dependent on Him! Without Jesus Christ in my life, I am nothing!
