"THEY"

"THEY' are faces of hurt,
and faces of hope,
from riches to rags,
a rapid steep slope.

What do we chase?
What do we need?
How much is worthy?
How much is greed?

If you have more
and I have less,
How does that lead
to such a mess?

What is valued,
What is dear?
The things that we have or
those we hold near?

We have fine houses,
we have fine cars,
then waste the blessings,
hanging out in bars.

We don't care who
has a meal or does not.
Talk about the poor
and the topics get hot.

"THEY" want to be that way
"THEY" won't work and gain.
One illness, one fall and
we now feel "THEIR" pain.

The bank owns the house,
now the Beamer is gone.
Our fine home is a tent
and we sing a new song.

Now we know
now we see
how easy it is
for "THEY" to be "ME".

The poor will always be
with us, He said.
Then we were commanded
to help them as led.

There is no judgment
no results to wiegh
Just a simple direction
to love the poor today.

So when we see them
will we wonder:
Are THEY really homeless
or in their own intentional blunder?

For even if
it is the latter-
something is wrong,
something's the matter.

Somewhere "THEY" lost
the hope for things bright
and slipped away quietly
into the night.

Who will reach out
for the hopeless and fight
Who will be Christ's hand
to guide them to light.

Do we have what it takes
to stay the course?
Even with no quick reward,
and with no remorse?

Will we entertain angels
or selfishly run?
And think only of gain,
of "ME" - number one?

Pray that none of us
need to walk in those shoes.
In the blink of an eye
all we could lose.

But never can we lose
that healing, guiding, love.
That grace and mercy,
from high above.

So be His hands today
as you walk down the street.
Be kind and giving to "THEY"
that live there, you meet.

Dedicated with love to and thanksgiving for the residents of Tent City, St Petersburg, Fl.
