Did You Know? How Much Gold Did King Solomon Own?

The Scriptures say that Hiram, king of Tyre, sent 4 tons of gold to Solomon, the queen of Sheba gave him a similar amount, and Solomon's fleet brought over 15 tons of gold from Ophir. "The weight of the gold that came to Solomon in one year amounted up to six hundred and sixty six talents of gold", or more that 25 tons. (1Kings 9:14, 28; 10:10, 14) Is this plausible? How big were royal gold reserves in antiquity?

An ancient inscription, which scholars judge as credible, states that Pharoah Thutmose III of Egypt (2nd millennium B.C.E.) presented some 13.5 tons of gold to the temple Amun-Ra at Karnak,. During the 8th century B.C.E., the Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser III received over 4 tons of gold in tribute from Tyre, and Sargon II of Macedonia (359-336 B.C.E.) is reported to have extracted more than 28 tons of gold each year from the mines of Pangaeum in Thrace.

When Philip's Alexander the Great (336-323B.C. E) captured the Persian city of Susa, he is said to have taken some 1,180 tons of gold from it and almost 7,000 tons from the whole of Persia.

So when compared with these reports, the Bible's description of King Solomon's gold is not exaggerated.

did you know that Solomon turned away from god?

did you know that at the end of his life Solomon had turned to baal and was burning babies because of his lust for foreign women?

did you know that Solomon had several HUNDRED women?

did you also know that Solomon is believed to be responsible for the division of the jews? that his great wealth was only acquired through such back breaking taxation and fees that it tore the kingdom into separate entities that never have been re-united?

how could a man that personally talked to god and received the blessing of the wisdom that he prayed for, and all the riches you speak of, fail so badly and become such a heathen before he died?

this man was no hero of god, he was our first politician

Hi Rocky,
Yes, I know about Solomon's fall from grace etc...but the interest in this small article isn't about Solomon himself but simply about whether the Bible verse was an exaggeration or not and showing comparisons to prove that it isn't. So many conjectures have been made on this point, even movies and such, that I thought it a tidbit of interest.
Yours,
Katid.

I just don't like the way the catholics, and others. make Solomon out to be some kind of hero of god. the man caused the split of the kingdom of god and started the jews down the slippery slope of eviction from their homeland.
