The Names and Titles of Our God Thanks to Neverold for his original article titled “The Names of Our God”. I do not know if this is his work or not nor do I know which translation he used. This research has served to teach me so much about God and His and their qualities, their personality traits and characteristics and has helped me become more intimate with God. The translation that I am using is The New World Bible and The King James Bible and if anyone finds any other names or titles for our God or His I would dearly love it if you could email the verse reference, the verse in full and the Bible translation it came from. I will add those verses or add the title or name if it is another term not used in one of the verses already listed. Cheers all, Katididaustralia. Names of God “I AM” “I Will Cause To Be” “He Causes To Become” “I Shall Prove To Be What I Shall Prove To Be” He is God by reason of His creatorship The Hebrew Tetragrammaton appears 6,828 times in translated Hebrew texts but was dropped from use around the 4 or 5th centuary A.C. due to ‘the traditions of man’. It appears 6,973 times in the New World translation due to changes made in some verses in other translations to read Adonai or Elohim. Elohim is often used to refer to Jehovah but is also used to describe others such as men, angels and pagan gods and probably means ‘be strong’ but when it is used to describe God it means ‘greatness & majesty, i.e. ‘The Great God’ and it draws attention to Jehovah’s greatness and strength as The Creator. As late as the fourth centuary C.E., Jerome, the translator of the Latin Vulgate, says in his prologue to the books of Samuel and Kings: “And we find the name of God, the Tetragrammaton in certain Greek volumes even to this day expressed in ancient letters.” In a letter written at Rome, 384 C.E., Jerome states: “The ninth (name of God) is the Tetragrammaton, which they consider (anekphoneton), that is, unspeakable, and it is written with these letters, Iod, He, Vau and He. Certain ignorant ones, because of the similarity of the characters, when they would find it in Greek books, were accustomed to read the Roman letters for PIPI since the characters look very similar.” The so-called christians then, who “replaced the Tetragrammaton with Kyrios in the Septuagint copies, were not the early disciples of Jesus. They were persons of later centuaries when the foretold apostasy was well developed and had corrupted the purity of the True Christian teaching. The Hebrew: ‘Eh-yeh’ ‘Asher’ ‘Eh-Yeh’ in some translations is rendered as “I Am That I Am”. However, it is to be noted that the Hebrew verb ha-yah, from which the word ‘Eh-yeh’ is drawn, does not mean simply “be”, rather, it means “become” or “prove to be”. The reference here is not to God’s self-existence but to what he has in mind to become to ward others. Therefore, the proper rendition is “I Shall Prove To Be What I Shall Prove To Be”. This reveals Jehovah as the One who, with progressive action, causes Himself to become the ‘Fulfiller of Promises’. Thus He always brings His purposes to realization. Only the true God could rightly and authentically bear such a name. Knowing Jehovah’s name is something very different from knowing the four letters of the Hebrew text that it is composed of. It is to know by experience that Jehovah really is what His name declares Him to be. All things relating to God’s person are holy; His personal name is holy and hence it is to be sanctified. Lev 22:29“And in case YOU should sacrifice a thanksgiving sacrifice to Jehovah, YOU should sacrifice it to gain approval for YOU. 22: 30 On that day it should be eaten. YOU must not leave any of it until morning. I am Jehovah. 22:31And YOU must keep my commandments and do them. I am Jehovah. 22:32And YOU must not profane my holy name, and I must be sanctified in the midst of the sons of Israel. I am Jehovah who is sanctifying YOU, 22:33 the One bringing YOU out of the land of Egypt to prove myself God to YOU. I am Jehovah.” To sanctify means, “make holy, set apart or hold as sacred,” and therefore not to be used as something common, or ordinary. Is. 6:3 And this one called to that one and said: “Holy, holy, holy is Jehovah of armies. The fullness of all the earth is his glory.” Luke 1:49 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies Jehovah, 1:47 and my spirit cannot keep from being overjoyed at God my Saviour; 1:48because he has looked upon the low position of his slave girl. For, look! from now on all generations will pronounce me happy; 1:49 because the powerful One has done great deeds for me and holy is his name; 1:50 and for generations after generations his mercy is upon those who fear him. Rev. 4:8And as for the four living creatures, each one of them respectively has six wings; round about and underneath they are full of eyes. And they have no rest day and night as they say: “Holy, holy, holy is Jehovah God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is coming.” Because of the person it represents, Jehovah’s name is fear-inspiring majestic and unreachably high as well as being regarded with awe. Ps. 99:3Let them laud your name. Great and fear-inspiring, holy it is. 99:4 And with the strength of a king judgment he has loved. You yourself have firmly established uprightness. Judgment and righteousness in Jacob are what you yourself have affected. 99:5 Exalt Jehovah our God and bow down yourselves at his footstool; He is holy. Ps. 8:1 O Jehovah our Lord, how majestic your name is in all the earth, You whose dignity is recounted above the heavens! Ps.148:13 Let them praise the name of Jehovah, for his name alone is unreachably high. His dignity is above earth and heaven. Is. 29:22Therefore this is what Jehovah has said to the house of Jacob, he that redeemed Abraham: “Jacob will not now be ashamed, nor will his own face now grow pale; 29:23 for when he sees his , the work of my hands, in the midst of him, they will sanctify my name, and they will certainly sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and the God of Israel they will regard with awe. 29:24 And those who are erring in [their] spirit will actually get to know understanding, and even those who are grumbling will learn instruction.” The evidence is that the divine name was so regarded until events in the Garden of Eden brought about its profanation as satan brought God’s name and reputation into question. Adam was Jehovah’s human representative and those serving in such a capacity are said to ‘minister in Jehovah’s name’ and ‘speak in His name’ Deut. 18:5For he is the one whom Jehovah your God has chosen out of all your tribes to stand to minister in the name of Jehovah, he and his sons, always. Deut. 18:18 prophet I shall raise up for them from the midst of their brothers, like you; and I shall indeed put my words in his mouth, and he will certainly speak to them all that I shall command him. 1 18:19And it must occur that the man who will not listen to my words that he will speak in my name, I shall myself require an account from him. James 5:10 Brothers, take as a pattern of the suffering of evil and the exercising of patience the prophets, who spoke in the name of Jehovah. Thus while his wife Eve had already profaned Jehovah’s name by her disobedience, Adam’s doing so was an especially reprehensible act of disrespect for the name he represented. 1Sam 15:22 In turn Samuel said: “Does Jehovah have as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of Jehovah? Look! To obey is better than a sacrifice, to pay attention than the fat of rams; 15:23 for rebelliousness is the same as the sin of divination, and pushing ahead presumptuously the same as [using] uncanny power and teraphim. Since you have rejected the word of Jehovah, he accordingly rejects you from being king.” In every respect Jesus Christ was a faithful reflection of the beautiful personality of His Father. Heb. 1:3 He is the reflection of [his] glory and the exact representation of his very being, and he sustains all things by the word of his power; and after he had made a purification for our sins he sat down on the right hand of the Majesty in lofty places. 1:4 So he has become better than the angels, to the extent that he has inherited a name more excellent than theirs. Noteworthy is the importance given to names themselves in the Hebrew Scriptures and amoung Semitic peoples. The very frequency of the appearance of the Tetragrammaton attests to its importance to the Bible’s author, whose name it is. Its use throughout the Scriptures far outnumbers that of any of the titles used. A study of the word ‘name’ in the Old Testament reveals how much it means in Hebrew. The name is not a mere label, but is significant of the real personality of him to whom it belongs. When a person puts his ‘name’ upon a thing or another person the latter comes under his influence and protection. It can mean a person’s reputation or the person himself. 1Sam.25:25 Please, do not let my lord set his heart upon this good-for-nothing man Na´bal, for, as his name is, so is he. Na´bal is his name, and senselessness is with him. As for me your slave girl, I did not see my lord’s young men that you had sent. 25:26 And now, my lord, as Jehovah is living and as your soul is living, Jehovah has held you back from entering into bloodguilt and having your own hand come to your salvation. And now let your enemies and those seeking injury to my lord become like Na´bal. Ps. 20:1 May Jehovah answer you in the day of distress. May the name of the God of Jacob protect you. Prov. 22:1 A name is to be chosen rather than abundant riches; favour is better than even silver and gold. 1.YHWH = Yahweh = Yahovah 2.JHWH = Jahweh = Jehovah (English translation, other languages say it a different way but they are all based on the Tetragrammaton) Exodus 3:11 However, Moses said to the [true] God: “Who am I that I should go to Phar´aoh and that I have to bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?” 3:12 To this he said: “Because I shall prove to be with you, and this is the sign for you that it is I who have sent you: After you have brought the people out of Egypt, YOU people will serve the [true] God on this mountain.” 3:13 Nevertheless, Moses said to the [true] God: “Suppose I am now come to the sons of Israel and I do say to them, ‘The God of YOUR forefathers has sent me to YOU,’ and they do say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?” 3:14 At this God said to Moses: “I SHALL PROVE TO BE WHAT I SHALL PROVE TO BE.” And he added: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘I SHALL PROVE TO BE has sent me to YOU.’” 3:15 Then God said once more to Moses: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘Jehovah the God of YOUR forefathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has sent me to YOU.’ This is my name to time indefinite, and this is the memorial of me to generation after generation. Isaiah 12:4 And in that day YOU will certainly say: “Give thanks to Jehovah, YOU people! Call upon his name. Make known among the peoples his dealings. Make mention that his name is put on high. Isaiah 42:8“I am Jehovah. That is my name; and to no one else shall I give my own glory, neither my praise to graven images. Isaiah 45:18For this is what Jehovah has said, the Creator of the heavens, He the [true] God, the Former of the earth and the Maker of it, He the One who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, who formed it even to be inhabited: “I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. Proverbs 18:10 The name of Jehovah is a strong tower. Into it the righteous runs and is given protection.” *Note: this may be saying that Jehovah has another name and that Jehovah is another title. 3.Jah Jehovah Is. 12:2 Look! God is my salvation. I shall trust and be in no dread; for Jah Jehovah is my strength and [my] might, and he came to be the salvation of me.” 4.Jah = shortened name i.e., Hallelujah = Praise Jah Ps.104:35 The sinners will be finished off from the earth; And as for the wicked, they will be no longer. Bless Jehovah, O my soul. Praise Jah, YOU people! 5.Jealous Exodus 34:11 “For your part keep what I am commanding you today. Here I am driving out from before you the Am´or•ites and the Ca´naan•ites and the Hit´tites and the Per´iz•zites and the Hi´vites and the Jeb´u•sites. 34:12 Watch yourself that you do not conclude a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you are going, for fear it may prove itself a snare in your midst. 34:13 But their altars YOU people are to pull down, and their sacred pillars YOU are to shatter, and their sacred poles YOU are to cut down. 34:14 For you must not prostrate yourself to another god, because Jehovah, whose name is Jealous, he is a jealous God; 34:15 for fear that you may conclude a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, as they will certainly have immoral intercourse with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone will be certain to invite you, and you will certainly eat some of his sacrifice. 34:16 Then you will have to take some of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters will be certain to have immoral intercourse with their gods and make your sons have immoral intercourse with their gods. 6.Jehovah Of Armies Is. 54:5 “For your Grand Maker is your husbandly owner, Jehovah of armies being his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Repurchaser. The God of the whole earth he will be called. 7.Jehovah Shalom = Jehovah Is Peace. 8.Jehovah-Shammah = Jehovah Himself Is There (this applies to the visionary city as depict by Ezekiel) 9.Jehovah Tsidhqenu = Jehovah Is Our Righteousness (used in the prophecies of Jeremiah) 10.Love 1Jn.4: 7 Beloved ones, let us continue loving one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born from God and gains the knowledge of God. 4:8 He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love. The God of the whole earth he will be called. 28.Jahve = Ha-Elohim or The One True God 29.Judge Gen. 16:5At this Sar´ai said to A´bram: “The violence done me be upon you. I myself gave my maidservant over to your bosom, and she became aware that she was pregnant, and I began to be despised in her eyes. May Jehovah judge between me and you.” Isaiah 30:18 And therefore Jehovah will keep in expectation of showing YOU favor, and therefore he will rise up to show YOU mercy. For Jehovah is a God of judgment. Happy are all those keeping in expectation of him. Gen. 18:25It is unthinkable of you that you are acting in this manner to put to death the righteous man with the wicked one so that it has to occur with the righteous man as it does with the wicked! It is unthinkable of you. Is the Judge of all the earth not going to do what is right?” Judges 11:27As for me, I have not sinned against you, but you are dealing wrong with me by fighting against me.
