Knowing it when you see it

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
-- Lao Tzu

We're all looking for the same thing--even if we won't admit it to others. That's real love.

What is "real love?"

It's more than a fluttery feeling in the pit of your stomach when you make that first connection with someone. It's an emotion that is built to last a lifetime, not merely a season. That perfect blending of friend and lover that makes life so much more interesting and worth living.

Here are a few examples of what real love looks like:

1. They will give you laugh lines when you're old.

2. They tell you they're proud of you on a daily basis.

3. They put your happiness on the same level as theirs.

4. They use positive superlatives when describing your relationship.

5. They use the word "when" not "if" when talking about their future and how you fit into it.

You get the picture. Real love is being on equal footing, with mutual respect. It can put enormous demands upon you both in order to maintain it, but the rewards are more than worth the effort.

How do you find real love? Now, that is a conundrum that we're all facing every day. Wisdom teaches us that we'll find it when we're not looking. However, I'm a firm believer in the axiom that God helps those who help themselves. So, here I am, tilting at windmills.

How about you? Have you known real love? Or, are you still searching?
