Meet the Cats on the Rock, Part 2

Meet Kira Nerys. Again, if you're not a Star Trek fan, the name will mean little. Suffice to say, the character is small, red-haired and a literal firecracker of a woman. Little did I know how fitting the name would be!

Kira only weighs about 6 pounds and is the size of a 6-month old kitten, but she's the Alpha of our household.

Kira started out as a suggestion from a friend who had seen her at WAIF. I've always wanted a flamepoint Siamese, so naturally, I went the very next day to pick her up. "Champagne" seemed so sweet and innocent in her little metal cage. She even leaped out into my arms and snuggled with me the entire time I did the paperwork to adopt her.

Of course, this was all a clever front to get into my heart and home.

No sooner did I get her home, than she revealed her true nature: an utter savage. Biter. Fighter. All around wench. The first thing she did after coming out of isolation was to throw herself bodily at my eldest at the time, Lucas. Next, she viciously bit me while I was simply stroking her back. My friends were all terrified of her!

Come to find out, she had been both abused and abandoned outside. She'd been living on the streets for at least 9 months, which must've been terribly scary for someone so small.

It's taken years of intensive touch therapy to soothe the savage beast into a cuddle kitty again, but well worth the effort. Princess Kira is a darling, spicy addition to the Cats on the Rock Clan.

You're so right, Schofield! I've found that cats -- and animals in general -- respond so well to loving care, that I've never had a problem introducing new cats to my household. Kira took the longest to come around, but I've had others who were terribly abused by previous owners, who opened right up to touch therapy. I actually use massage techniques as well, and that really helps with nervousness and aggressive behaviors.
