The Book of Song of Songs.

It is a Book of love.

Yes , to understand the Song , we should take it symbolically , not literally.

Take for example the words :

" Fair as the moon " do not conform with with the description , " I am dark but lovely, O of Jerusalem "

How can it be dark like tents of kedar , and at the same time fair as the moon ?!!!

The moon has no darkness in its beauty. That which is dark in the church of the Gentiles :

That church did not belong to the fathers and the prophets .

It was alien from the commonealth of Israel , and stranger from the covenants , the promises and the Law.
It was without hope

( Eph.2:12)

But that church became fair as the moon through the righteousness it has received in Christ.

Its beauty became perfect through His splendor which He had bestowed on it
( Ezk.16:14),

and through His precious Blood that blotted out its sins.

The church said addressing the believers of the Old Testament ,

" O daughters of Jerusalem " I am dark ,, but lovely "

As if saying I am dark with my past and origin , but fair my present !

The verse " Fair as the moon "

bear a spiritual deep and beautiful significance.

It is well known that the moon is dark in itself , and it derives its light from the sun.

Likewise the church of the Gentiles which was not beautiful in itself because it had no Faith , having received the light of God became fair as the moon.

We can also say by analogy that our nature had been dark by its sinfulness , but was endowed beauty by the Lord through His wonderful Redemption.

Such beauty is clear in the new nature we receive when born anew in baptism.

The Book of the Song speaks about the love between God and the human soul , Or between God and the church.

This love is likened to the love between the groom and his pride.

The Song is not as some critics claim to be a love affair.

Actually it is the story of exchanged love between God and the human soul or the church.

Many similes in the Song can not be taken literally as words of love between two lovers .!

Let us take for example the words :

" I have compared you my love , to my filly among Pharoah's "

( Song 1:9)

Can any girl accept to be described by her lover by such words " A filly..... ?!

Would she not prefer any other description referring to her femininity and delicacy ?!

This reminds us of the other simile ,

" awesome as an army with banners "

( Song 6:10)

Who also may accept that her lover describes her beauty , saying ,

"Your hair is like a flock of goats ,going down from Mount Gilead "
( Song 4:1)
Such descript

ion is rather more appropriate for the church or the believer's soul that fights lusts and devils.

" You have dove's eyes"

These words represent another spiritual beautiful meaning :

+ The eyes represent the insight. and the dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirity, as in the Lord's baptism.
( Mt.3:16)

It is sometimes a symbol of the burnt offering which the poor offers to God .
( Lev.1:14)
and the eyes which described as dove's can have both meaning "

+ If we take the eyes with the first meaning , i.e.as a symbol of insight , it In such a case a person's eye is the dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit.

He looks at everything with a holy spiritual look , unlike the people of the world !! means that person has spiritual insight or understanding.

+But if we take the eyes with the second meaning i.e. the burnt offering of the poor , then a person is described as poor in the spirit or humble
( Mt.3:5)

He offers himself a living sacrifice acceptable to God as the apostle commands us
( Rom.12:1)

He offers himself with a contrite heart , obedient even unto death.
This meaning is clear in the Lord's words :

" Turn your eyeaway from me, for they have overcome me "

The human soul which has broken eyes , full of tears, revealing a contrite heart is that which struggle with God and overcomes .

These words of the Song are addressed to such an eye.
A person with such eyes are like the broken and weak Jacob , who wrestled with God and prevailed. And Jacob received blessing , for he said to the Lord ,

" I will not let You go unless You bless me !"

( Gen.32:26,2

Indeed the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit. A broken and contrite heart , these will not be despised by God
( Ps.51:17)

The weeping soul which lifts her eyes full of tears to God , this deserves to hear the wordsof the Lord ,

" Turn your eyes away from Me "

The smile "eye like dove's eyes" bear another spiritual meaning.

The eye which are like dove's are simple , pure and good as the Lord taught us in

( Mt.10:16)
He said further ,

" If therefore your eye is good , your whole body will be full of light "
( Mt.6:22)

The bride in the Song describes the Groom , the Lord Christ , as having eyes like doves by bthe rivers of waters
( Song5:12 )

His eyes representing HisHis insight , reveal the Holy Spirit.

For if an ordinary believer will have rivers of living water flow out of his heart , i.e the Holy Spirit

( Jn.7:38,39), How much rater would be the Lord Christ who the Holy Spirit abiding in Him.

It is a good simile indeed, " like doves by the rivers of water"

The Psalmist gave the same simile to the righteous in (Ps.1:3),

" Like a tree planted by the rivers of water "

We aim by these contimplation to go into the depth of the Book, and to understand its significance and symbols and to prove is not as some members claim to be a love affair.
Actually it is the story of exchanged love between God and the human soul or the church.

" Who is she looks forth as the morning , fair as the moon , clear as the sun , awesome as an army with banners?"

( Song6:10)

To properly this verse of the Song we should take it symbolically not literally.

The words

"awesome as an army with banners " , are not acceptable to any woman.

For how can a wpman accept to be described as awesome , wheras women are supposed to be delicate ?

On the contrary, the church can be awesome for the devil and the world and for evil forces like an army with many banners.

The church was awesome for the Pagan philosophy, for the worshippers of the idols , and for any deviation or corruption.

It was awesome to those because it was clear as the moon.

The song is not as some members claim it to be a love-affair !!

Actually it is a story of exchanged love between God and the human soul or the church.

The Letter kills , but the Spirit gives life.
