Who are the Seraphim ?

Who are the Seraphim ?

Question

Who are the Seraphim and what do they do?

The word "Seraphim " is plural, the singular is "Seraph", and this word is used for a particular kind of angel , all of whom have six wings , with two of which they cover their faces , with another two their feet and with the remaining two they fly.

The particular passage in which the Bible refers to the Seraphim is to be found in Isaiah , when the prophet saw these angels around the throne of God , praising Him and saying ,

" Holy , Holy , Holy is the Lord of Hosts , the whole earth is full of His glory "
(Isaiah 3:6)

Now , what do they do?

As for the four living creatures around God's throne.
The Scripture tells us as in Revelation as follows " Around the throne , were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back .
The First ...was like a lion
The second ... like a calf
The third .. had a face like a man
The fourth ...eas like a flying eagle" (Rev4;6,7)

probably those creatures are symbols of other things ; the lion represent fierce animals , the calf represents tame animals , man represents rational beings , the eagle represents flying beings ; a symbol of heavenly host.

Those four creatures also remind us of the four Gospels sent to the whole world , to every ceature. (Mk 16;15).

The work of Seraphim

is to praise , even so , when they heared Isaiah cry ,

" Woe to me !.....I am ruined ! for I am a man of unclean lips"

One of the Seraphim , flew down with a live coal in his hand , which he had taken with tongs from the altar "

and He touched Isaiah on the mouth and said ;

" See this has touched your lips ; your guilt has taken away and your sin atoned for "

(Isa 6)

There is no mention anywhere in the Bible that any of the Seraphim has ever fallen.

The literal meaning of the word " Seraphim" is 'the burning ones' or the ' the one who blaze with fire'

and it is very clear in their name that they symbolise the divine love , and love never fails.

Happy New year.
