HEALTHY PETS

Hello fellow pet owners. I have five Miniature Schnauzers ages 7 through 11 years. They are mostly healthy with a few exceptions. My 7 year old female and mother to the three female siblings, has interstitial pulmonary fibrosis which is a very rare and slowly progressing disease. She was initially diagnosed in September 2008 and we are very fortunate to still have her with us to date. I believe in prayer and miracles along with the help of an excellent homeopathic veterinarian who has been working diligently through various homeopathic remedies to slow the progression of this life threatening disease. I am very grateful for having been led to her and I believe this was a result of all our prayers.

While working with our veterinarian, she has also taught me how to make and keep my dogs (or pets in general) healthy in pointing out all the pros and cons of pet foods and treats as well as people foods.

I would like to share with you some of the things she has shared with me in helping you be more aware of how feeding our pets and keeping their environment safe is very critical in the health and life span of our furry . Please READ the ingredients of your pet foods. Stay away from glutens, corn, wheats and byproducts. What is listed first is what primarily makes up the food. The more natural the food, obviously, the better for your pet. Stay away from harmful additives, dyes, salts, sugars, hormones, BHA/BHT, antibiotics and artificial ingredients. Also, look into supplements or vitamins (check with your veterinarian first) to help with common ailments such as skin, heart, eye, joint, arthritis, immune system, etc., conditions. Many pet foods and treats now offer flaxseed, taurine, turmeric, cinnamon, fish oils, vitamin E, Omega-3, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, fruits, vegetables, fish and the like which is comparable to human food!

Be well informed on what is toxic for your pets -- ONIONS, GARLIC, CHOCOLATE, GRAPES, RAISINS, MACADAMIA NUTS, MUSHROOMS(LAWN/CANNED), CHICKEN BONES are the worst offenders and can cause serious illness and/or death. There are many articles on line written by reputable veterinarians or ask your veterinarian to provide you with a complete list of toxic foods. Also lawn preparations/insecticides are very harmful to your pets. Do not spray aerosols/disinfectants/air freshners in the house unless well ventilated and away from your pets. Remember, if it's harmful to us, it is to your pet as well. There are also natural flea/tick/mosquito repellants in lieu of chemicals.

Always ask your veterinarian about your pet's specific needs before making any changes in his/her diet or supplements. Keeping our furry babies healthy is all up to us! Good luck!
