death penalty-mans law vs Gods law

Hey All;
After some intense moments of fellowship in chat I want to ask you guys a question about the death penalty. As a Christian what should are stance be? I will play advocate for the other side for a moment. The other person was talking about grace, mercy, forgiveness and judgement. IF a person wants to kill somebody and doesn't but hates them are they a murder? The bible says YES right? So if a person actually kills a person should they be forgiven or be put to death? My stance was say at Virginia Tech or Columbine. If you were a teacher or a security guard and a Christian, would you be justified to kill the shooter? If someone out of their mind on drugs went to a day care center, killed several and had hostages and was going to kill more. If you were a Christian cop, a police sniper, would you kill him? Would you yell thru a bullhorn "Jesus loves you and He forgives you?" Should a woman that kills her baby and doesn't report it to police for weeks and there is the smell of death in the trunk, should she be put to death if found guilty? When as Christians do we take a stand and act or do we just keep preaching forgiveness and peace and love? Is there penaltys for murders even though they have repented and become Christians? Do you guys remember Carla Faye Tucker in Texas? She killed but became a Christian in prison and She said, "Even though I am a Christian and I know the Lord has forgiven me, I know I deserve to die" and she was put to death. So, what do you think? Would like some feedback. Thanks and God bless. Russ

All of us are worthy of death. Praise God we are no longer under the law but under grace if we are born again of the holy Spirit and washed in the blood of the lamb!!!

Isaiah 42:8 " I am the Lord; that is my name! And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to graven images."

The death penalty for murder was authorised by God to Noah {see Genesis 9 v 6} and this authority has never been withdrawn. Paul confirms {Romans 13 v 4} that properly instituted governments have the authority to carry this out - not individuals in an act of venegeance.

I don't know the details of the Virginia Tech or Columbine situations, but if someone killed one of the gunman in self defence or to save the life of another, I wouldn't call that murder. If I was a Christian cop in that situation and had been given the order to shoot the gunman I would not hesitate to do so, as I would be under the authority Paul describes in Romans 13.

Without going into detail as to what might constitute mitigating circumstances, I would not be in favour of carrying out the death penalty in the modern context. People today {in or out of authority} are so corrupt that many many times people have been convicted of all sorts of crimes by mistake. If you have executed someone then you cannot do anything if it later transpires they were innocent. If they have spent years in prison you cannot give them those years back but at least you can release them and give them back the rest of their lives.

Kim, whom was this addressed to? Think if it was a "bullet"! LOL!
Certainly not me, 'cause I'm against the death penalty, if you read the link! DUH!

I suspect it was aimed at me in view of my assertion that the death penalty authorised to Noah is still in force. But Genesis 9 predated the Mosaic law and was given to the entire human race, not just the Jews. It is not part of the old covenant and was therefore not cancelled when the new covenant came into force.

But even if the law was still in force I wouldn't stone hookers. I have given one reason for my reluctance to impose the death penalty. Another is Jesus' comment "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". Since I am not without sin I would not feel entitled to pick up the stone.

Point taken BB....the topic in general!!! The death penalty is old testament law...why not implement all the law? i am doing my presentation on restorative justice....maybe I will post it after. I work with offenders and my heart is to see them rehabilitated so as not to reoffend.

goldens

even some of the Christians on this site would have no problem personally carrying out an execution to an already condemned person.

Ain't that the truth....

Closure is an important aspect of restorative justice, the victim needs closure. It is important for the healing process.
