Do you think prophecy is like, for real??

I have a friend who swears by it. I've had dreams and revelations as I grew closer to God, and I knew a girl who, just like me, had a few dreams which literally came true. Would you say this is a form of prophecy? I only wish to know because I've been praying to God for a while for something specific but for the life of me, cannot seem to find an answer to my prayer...I do live closely to God, and I feel like I'm running out of time...but the main thing is, which I now wonder about is, what is your take on the gift of prophecy??

Prophecy literally means 'one who sees.' It is generally used referring to those who speak visions to God's people. What you are describing could be considered visions. There are also words of knowledge.

Well walking man, I often see things before they happen, and the world trains me to call it intuition...
I've had "premonitions" that certain people would either die, or do one or other something, and it happened, and if you could imagine how that made me feel, then perhaps you might know exactly what i mean...
I dont think of myself as a prophet or prophetess, but does this mean I have potential??? **excited now**

In the prophetic calling God usually starts out that way with seeing things just before they happen. The thing is if God showing you people dying be praying for their soul and interceding for their life. When God shows me things I pray for the ones hes showing me things about.Paul is right, prophesies are for an individual or for a body of people. A dream is a vision for the prophet for the future.Usually its something you share at the appointed time.He may be training you up in this gift.GBY

Please remember to keep our soldiers in your prayers!!! Kristy

A prophet warns others about what they have seen. Which brings up the question, do you think your word could change the otucome? That's a prophetic gift!

Or do you think whatever you 'saw' would still happen?

Ditto. Satan can imitate any gift and use it for bad.
Part of the answer is where you are with God presently.
Indulging the flesh works against discernment of the true gifts.
Drawing nearer to God and self-denial heighten the spiritual senses.

The gift of prophecy is one of the nine gifts or "manifestations" of the Spirit listed in 1 Cor. 12-11 and is certainly for today. However, just because someone says 'Thus says the Lord' does not necessarily mean it is true. One must really be hearing from the Holy Spirit, not one's own feelings or preferences. It is a dangerous thing to say "thus says the Lord" and then give your own opinion or preferences. However, that being said the scripture says " you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and be encouraged" ( 1 Cor.14:31).
